FDA Schedules Patient-Centered Meeting on GI Disorders

March 26, 2015

An upcoming FDA meeting will provide patients a forum to share their experiences with GI disorders and current treatment options. Encourage your patients to learn more about how they can participate.

FDA will be convening a public meeting to solicit patient input related to functional GI disorders. The meeting is part of FDA’s ongoing Patient-Focused Drug Development initiative, which consists of more than 20 public meetings to solicit patient input on different disease areas.

The GI meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 11, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the FDA’s White Oak Campus in Silver Spring, MD. Tell your patients — individuals interested in attending the meeting must register before May 1. A webcast will also be available.

The upcoming meeting is primarily intended to provide a forum for patient input. The format will include both panel discussions consisting of patients and patient advocates, as well as an opportunity for public dialogue that allows patients in the audience to provide thoughts on GI disorders and available treatment options. In addition to general comments about GI symptoms and their impact on patients’ daily lives, a more specific discussion will address treatments for disorders, including IBS, gastroparesis, chronic persistent symptomatic GERD and chronic idiopathic constipation.

As part of the discussion, patients will be asked to speak on the efficacy of their treatments on symptoms management and whether treatment regimens enhance their ability to engage in daily activities. Patients will also have the opportunity to speak on drawbacks associated with existing treatment options and how they negatively impact daily life. FDA is asking patients to provide their thoughts on ideal traits for new treatment options to address GI disorders in the future.

Invite your patients: share the registration and background information, which includes a list of discussion topics.
